Description

In a glass castle far above the ground, lived a king: the sun, and his queen: the moon. each day he would ride across the sky in a blaze of golden armour and bring light to the people of the kingdom below, and each day the people would rise to work the fields and wander the earth until the day stretched to the mountains and the sun set beyond them once more. When the king grew weary at the end of each day, the queen stepped from the castle and pulled her shadowy cloak across the sky, the orange edges of his glow disappearing under shades dark blue, then black. She was content to wander the night sky as she pleased, bringing with her the beauty of the full moon. As the days continued the king grew resentful of the way the people would shield their eyes and their bodies from him while they lifted their faces to welcome the queen each night. He became suspicious of her, and in spite, he took away the light of the moon.

The people became fearful, but they were strong. When the day began to fade, they gathered together with those they loved, lighting candles in prayer for the queen to return to the sky once more. The queen, looking down from her place above, saw how their candles shone in bravery and admiration and she swept the little flames into her arms. She threw the folds of her shadowy cloak across the sky as she did every night, and this time the darkness was dotted with thousands of the twinkling lights. No longer afraid of the king’s wrath, she rose to the night sky once more and vowed that she would spend one night of every month in darkness, so that the people of the earth could look to the skies and admire their stars.

And so the king’s rage was left to burn to the edges of the world each day, while the queen partook in an endless cycle of light and darkness, of death and rebirth, so that all could remember how the light that which gave them hope had come from within them.
